Quilled Leaves

Isn't it amazing how a simple act of glueing together rolled and shaped strips of colourful paper can create a beautiful piece of Art. Quilling has always amazed me and a quilled piece of work on the wall adds so much of cheer and beauty to the whole place. I was always of the notion that quilling was a fairly recent Crafting style. The word quilling has been probably not even added to the 'SpellCheck' Dictionary as yet, spellcheck has been consistently underlining every occurrence of the word "Quilling" that I've typed with red. But surprisingly quilling's been around since the 16th century. It was initially practiced by Nuns to decorate the cover and edges of Books and then in the 18th Century it moved on to be an art practiced by the "Upper Class" Ladies. Wiki says "It was one of the few things ladies could do that was thought not too taxing for their minds or gentle dispositions". It's difficult to imagine that Women in the Victorian times even had a list of Crafts that were allowed and not allowed. Quilling's even been defined as a craft that was confined to the Upper Class. It's weird to even think of being deprived of something as simple as practicing an art just because you don't belong to a particular gender, social class or community. I always hear people around me telling me that we live in a "bad age" where there is no morality or values. But I would say we are blessed to be born in this age or time of equality and individualism. Guess every age has it's own set of problems, if they had wars, classism and slavery we have media, exposure and excess knowledge !
Coming to these quilled pieces I thoroughly enjoyed making them. Quilling does not involve a lot of concentration and can be really relaxing !

They really add colour to the room when they are hung on the walls !

Quilled Wall Hanging

The quilling mania continues :) I've been wanting to do a quilled project for a long time, but quilling supplies here are very expensive .The craze for quilling hasn't caught on yet here in Germany. So this time on my trip to India,I loaded myself with a lot of quilling supplies.I visited a good old shop in one of the small lanes in Purasawalkam,Chennai  where I remember hunting for thermocol and charts back in my school days.I was surprised to find the shop still very much the same but filled with crafting stuff of every possible kind.It did take a long time to finish the wall hanging, but the end product was worth the effort.

Quilling these little bugs was very interesting !Though I gave up trying to stick a wing on the Honey bee !

The lady bug is my favourite :)

Framing it was yet another Challenge !
