Pull String Piñata - DIY

Indoor Birthday parties can get boring at times,so this time we thought it would be fun if the little ones could play some games to amuse themselves. When I asked Little Girl what game she wanted to play on her B'day she told me that she wanted a Piñata .The only Piñata  I knew was the one where blindfolded kids try to break an animal shaped container full of chocolates. And when you stay in the second floor of an apartment that's  next to impossible :).So I tried to explain to her that we cannot break it at home. But then she told me that you wouldn't have to break it and her favorite cartoon character Dora makes it for her friend Boots the monkey. So I sat with her and watched the episode to understand how the Pull string Piñata  works and i loved the idea. We had 7 children within the age group of 1.5 - 5 years coming for the party and I felt that it would be fun. After googling a bit we started to make it with papier-mache.It was fun making it,a bit messy though :) And the look on the kids faces when the chocolates came tumbling down was priceless :)

What You'll Need:
A Nice big balloon fully blown
All Purpose Flour - 2 - 3 cups
Water - 4 - 6 cups
Old News Papers or Magazines
Ribbons
Decorating Paper
A sharp Knife

Let's get started:
-Mix the flour and the water to make a nice smooth paste.
-Tear the Newspaper into strips about 1" wide roughly.
-Dip the strips of the paper one by one into the paste and when they are fully coated with the paste, drag the pieces between your index and middle finger to remove any excess paste.
-Now stick the paper strips to the baloon until the whole baloon is fully covered.Apply one more layer and let it dry. This might take some time,a day or two sometimes. You can speed up the process by using a hair dryer. But make sure you use the cold setting or a slightly warm setting. The warmest setting might really speed up the process, but sometimes it might make ur paper mache to crack...
-After the first layer is fully dried make another layer and repeat the process...If you feel that your pinata is strong you can stop adding extra layers, else add another layer.

-Now pop the baloon .Then you'll have to make four slits on the top of it,and put ribbons through them so that they can be hanged from somewhere.

-You'll have to make an opening at the bottom to put the candies inside.Something like the picture below, where you cut it on three sides of a rectangle, leaving one side to make it work like a flap.

-We had seven children coming,so I put six slits on around the bottom rectangular opening and one on the flap,so that it'll open the flap when pulled.
-On the six slits around the opening i just inserted  ribbons,so that they would just come out when pulled out.
-The 7th ribbon was inserted into the flap and fastened tightly so that it would open the flap.

-The flap has to be kept in place, after it's fully loaded with goodies. So three small flaps were struck, one one each side of the rectangular opening and the flap was inserted into it.I used the flap from some cardboard boxes to do this.

-If you feel that flaps are not strong enough to hold the weight of the candies, you can use any kind of adhesive tape, but just make sure that it isn't stuck very strongly and would give away when pulled.
-Just make sure that all the ribbons are of the same length.

-You can decorate the pinata, however you want.Just make it very colorful.Since the birthday was pocoyo themed,we decided to make the pinata in blue.I had some decorations that was leftover from last year's party.Since I love recycling we happily decorated the pinata with them:)

-Many times in birthday parties all the children stand around the pinata ,each holding a ribbon. Then they pull it at the same time. But we had the children lined up and each had a chance to pull a ribbon. To make it more fun fill it with candies that look like gold coins, that's what we did.And the moment the chocolates spilled down the children started picking up the chocolates, each trying to pick more chocolates that the other. It was real fun :)

Note:
This works for Kids under 6.Kids above 6 spot the ribbon that will open the flap in no time :)

Birthday Name Plate - Foam Sheet Craft !

Little girl turned 3 recently. I asked her what theme she'd like for her birthday expecting her to say 'Hello Kitty' or ''All pink' or 'Winnie the Pooh'.But then she surprised me by telling 'Pocoyo'.The shops here seemed to be filled with decorations for Hello Kitty and 'Princess Birthday' theme for girls and 'Cars' for boys.So this is a name plate that I made out of Foam sheet for her B'day.I initially planned to make it out of
cardboard and chart, but I found lots of foam sheets on sale in a shop so decided to make it with them instead.Honestly they came out very neatly that I was glad that I had decided to go with Foam sheet :)

Oil Painting - Girls collecting flowers

This is an oil painting that I've wanted to do for a long time. The original is a poster that many of you would've seen.I bought it before years in Chennai. The original painting has a kind of dreamy, mystical background and yes definitely more professional and beautiful. This is my first attempt at painting reflections and I'm not exactly satisfied with the outcome :)Hope one day I could paint as beautifully as the original artist :)

Glass jar Craft - Recycling craft

I've been wanting to do glass painting for quite sometime and have collected a couple of glass jars. But I still haven't found any special paints for glass painting in the shops here. Those that I found online were pricey too, guess I'll have to wait for my next trip to India to buy them.Meanwhile I had some fabric paint lying around,so one rainy afternoon little girl and I decided to make something out of it to fight boredom. I just stuck two glass jars with their mouths together and did some simple designs on it ( scribbling actually :)).Then  Little girl stuck some stones on it with double sided tape :)

It looked pretty with sunlight filtering through it..

These pom poms are made using forks of different sizes and are hence hassle free. You don't need to cut cardboard pieces to make them:)

Sketch Pen Birdhouse - Recycling Craft & A Makeover !

I had been concentrating on  my cooking blog and had totally neglected my poor craft blog.Neither did I like the name nor the appearance of it,so decided to give it a face lift today :) Collected all my craft supplies to make a colorful background ,found that I had so much that I had been accumulating over the past few years :)As for the name,it's easy to guess :) Was teaching my daughter to play Rock-Paper-Scissors,when I suddenly felt that Hook-Paper-Scissors sounds definitely more interesting than my previous title 'Get Crafting'.

Coming to today's post,I'm a person who can't simply throw away things unless I know that I can't make anything else out of them.Hubby feels that I have some problem with discarding things :) I have a huge carton full of things that I intend to recycle, hopefully ! Little Girl loves coloring and scribbling. It was like she suddenly took an interest to coloring and scribbling when she just crossed her first birthday and yes my beige color Sofa is full of marks now :( So we bought this big bucket of sketch pens so that it'll be easier to clean up and remove the marks. Now she's lost interest in coloring and I was left with a bucket of used Sketch pens.Seriously I couldn't get myself to throw those little colorful sticks in the bin :( So kept stocking them up until I came up with this simple idea.

It's very simple to make .I just used an old face cream container, some cardboard and a double sided sellotape apart from the sketch pens.

I used an old unused marker and the lid of an old box to connect both the parts of the bird house.
I wanted to make a small bird (something that resembled a bird actually :)) for the birdhouse.Guess that's easy to figure out. It's the box found in Kinder Joy Chocolate.Little girl loves it and sometimes I give in and get her one.She collects the toys inside while I collect the boxes.I just glued a pair of eyes and a straw to it :)

Thanks for stopping by at my space.Have a lovely day !

Winnie the Pooh Series - Crocheted Piglet !

Little girl is a big fan of Winnie the pooh and its friends,so am I .I actually started with crocheting Winnie the Pooh, but once when i was done with the ears and the hands I ran out of yarn.On checking at the store I couldn't find the exact color or brand .I was kind of stuck, when little girl had one look at my yarn basket, pulled pink out and told me 'Piglet' :) Was browsing the web for good material for stuffing the doll when I read somewhere that old fabrics or rags make great stuffing.I'm a person who doesn't like wasting things and I try to recycle things as much as I can.And my good old unused dresses are all turning into stuffing now :)
