Quilled Leaves

Isn't it amazing how a simple act of glueing together rolled and shaped strips of colourful paper can create a beautiful piece of Art. Quilling has always amazed me and a quilled piece of work on the wall adds so much of cheer and beauty to the whole place. I was always of the notion that quilling was a fairly recent Crafting style. The word quilling has been probably not even added to the 'SpellCheck' Dictionary as yet, spellcheck has been consistently underlining every occurrence of the word "Quilling" that I've typed with red. But surprisingly quilling's been around since the 16th century. It was initially practiced by Nuns to decorate the cover and edges of Books and then in the 18th Century it moved on to be an art practiced by the "Upper Class" Ladies. Wiki says "It was one of the few things ladies could do that was thought not too taxing for their minds or gentle dispositions". It's difficult to imagine that Women in the Victorian times even had a list of Crafts that were allowed and not allowed. Quilling's even been defined as a craft that was confined to the Upper Class. It's weird to even think of being deprived of something as simple as practicing an art just because you don't belong to a particular gender, social class or community. I always hear people around me telling me that we live in a "bad age" where there is no morality or values. But I would say we are blessed to be born in this age or time of equality and individualism. Guess every age has it's own set of problems, if they had wars, classism and slavery we have media, exposure and excess knowledge !
Coming to these quilled pieces I thoroughly enjoyed making them. Quilling does not involve a lot of concentration and can be really relaxing !

They really add colour to the room when they are hung on the walls !

Crochet wall Hangings

It's been a while since I posted though I've been pretty busy with the hook and yarn.
I made these cute Wall Hangings to cheer up the walls at home.
Here we go !

No matter how old you get the sight of a Rainbow in the sky is definitely bound to fill you with child like excitement. This Rainbow Wall Hanging was initially meant to be a mobile for a baby's crib, but since I never found the time to do it as my kids were young I turned it into a wall Hanging

This was made to please my 3 year old who suddenly was all in love with Owls.
Honestly Owls !!? When I was a kid(well even now) I found Owls scary and creepy.
This one's on the Wall and she wishes it Good Night everyday before she sleeps :)

This was something I did for myself. I love bird houses in all forms, be it the real wood ones or the craft ones in Plastic canvas or Paper.

Happy Crafting !

DIY Kitchen Planner - Recycling Craft

It's been a while since I posted any recycling craft here.I'm a pack rat,as I've mentioned here .I can't throw away anything that I even remotely feel can be reused or recycled. So when I ended up breaking a photo frame when we moved house, I turned it into a kitchen planner. Before a few years a Kitchen planner would have been the last thing I would've crafted. I could pull out a shopping list right out of my head without even having to look into the Fridge and the cupboards. Well when you are a mother of two kids you reach a point where you miss to even buy things which are on the list you have in your hands ,let's not talk about forgetting to take that list ! Well there is an upside to the forgetfulness ,you'd become an expert at finding the substitute for things. Like when you forget to buy Flour to make a cake or make a makeshift envelope.Though I'm yet to find the substitute for salt which I sometimes manage to forget !

I added a few things to the old frame, which I found in my craft box and my daughter's pencil pouch .
A couple of buttons, some colourful tape, one of those pen caps which are always lying around with the pen missing and some post it notes.
It looks both decorative on the Kitchen wall and serves it's purpose, meaning I write the stuff I need on it before I forget them.

Quilled Wall Hanging

After what seems like ages I sat with my quilling supplies to make this wall hanging. The house and the fence were made with modelling clay.

I've always wanted to try out quilled alphabets and they turned out cuter than I expected.

This is my best friend,my bicycle,I look at it almost like a companion. I've always had one right from my childhood. And nothing beats the happiness in riding it and exploring new places.

And here's my attempt to quill something similar....

It took sometime to finish this wall hanging, but filled me with  a lot of happiness :)

Easter Crafting !

Spring is my favourite season of the year,it's a joy to watch things bloom, get your hands dirty with planting seeds and to just look at the different shades of green after the bleak grey winter days. And this year despite the coldness the sun decided to cheer us up by showing up more often and chased the rain clouds away.Easter is usually a very quite thing at home,But this time with the kids having two weeks of easter holidays,we decided to decorate our windows. The Crafting kept us busy during the holidays and it did add more colour to the otherwise beautiful spring outside.
Little girl and I painted these eggs:
I just made two tiny holes on the two corners of the egg and using a straw blew out the white and yellow portion into a bowl.

The eggs drying after their first coat of paint :)

Then we decided to make them more colourful and painted our designs on them

This is a little paper craft that we made for our window

I did the drawing while my daughter did the cutting and pasting.

Finally we stringed the eggs and hung them on the window :)

Quilled Wall Hanging

I've wanted to make these quilled bells for a long time,It took me five to 6 attempts before I got them right.I realised that they were meant to be made by nimble fingered, patient people and not a restless person like me :P

Christmas season is over and it's time to throw the Christmas tree away. This year we were blessed with  a beautiful tree, just the right size, shape and stayed fresh for almost 1.5 months. Doesn't the tree almost become a part of the family during Christmas.Hubby & I stayed up late on Christmas's eve after our daughter went to bed ,to pack her gifts. She had already told Santa that she wanted everything to do with Princess Anna & Elsa :)

And not to forget our thoughtful Neighbours who leave gifts at our doorstep. My daughter strongly believes that it's Santa and not the neighbours who leave her gifts, and asks why she needs to thank the neighbours every year :)

Wishing you all another beautiful year knitted with happiness and stuffed with blessings !

Happy New Year 2015

I made this little bear key chain for a good friend. He had such an innocent look about him that he reminds me one of my pussy cats.My daughter decided to call him 'dunna'(thin one) cause he looks so thin and tiny :)

I wasn't sure if my my friend would like him,but she uses the key chain now for her house keys .It brings a smile on my face every time I see it :)

Quilled Birthday Card

Little girl turned 4 recently and I was more than happy to use it as an excuse to get my quilling supplies out and get quilling again :)

I simply love Bee hive quilling, probably the easiest quilling style, but simply the  best.

So there's the simple quilled card for my little girl who loves pink.Honestly more than the quilling she was happy to receive a card with her favourite colours, pink & purple :)

Green Pastures - Oil Painitng

My paintbrush and paints looked so neglected,I haven't painted in a long time.I was waiting for summer so that I could keep the windows open and do a nice oil panting. In winter we keep the windows closed and the chemical smell from the paint and the medium just circulates inside the house. This is another attempt to improve my oil painting skills :)The painting looks better in person,as the oil paint kind of reflects light when I attempt to photograph it.....

Quilled Wall Hanging

The quilling mania continues :) I've been wanting to do a quilled project for a long time, but quilling supplies here are very expensive .The craze for quilling hasn't caught on yet here in Germany. So this time on my trip to India,I loaded myself with a lot of quilling supplies.I visited a good old shop in one of the small lanes in Purasawalkam,Chennai  where I remember hunting for thermocol and charts back in my school days.I was surprised to find the shop still very much the same but filled with crafting stuff of every possible kind.It did take a long time to finish the wall hanging, but the end product was worth the effort.

Quilling these little bugs was very interesting !Though I gave up trying to stick a wing on the Honey bee !

The lady bug is my favourite :)

Framing it was yet another Challenge !
